This variable is the main party ID variable. It indicates the respondent's most recent answer to the party ID questions MA02, MA03, MA04, and MA05. Computation of this variable differed by wave:
For Wave 1, if a respondent had previously completed a public affairs profile interview (Wave B), the party ID answers from that interview were copied to the Wave 1 data. If a respondent had not previously specified party ID in a public affairs profile interview, party ID was asked in the Wave 1 interview. See also MA08.
For Wave 2, all respondents were asked party ID in the Wave 2 interview.
For Wave 3, if a respondent had previously specified party ID (in Wave 1, 2, and/or B), the most recent answer was copied to the Wave 3 data. Otherwise, respondents were asked party ID in the Wave 3 interview. See also MA08.
For Waves 4 and 5, all respondents were asked party ID in those interviews.
